Back when Ari and I lived in Albuquerque we had a conversation about the beauty of the Spanish language. We were driving along Lomas Blvd. when a delivery truck for Bueno burritos passed us. It occured to me just how much better Bueno sounded than Good, even though it’s the same word, only in Spanish. Think about it: Good just doesn’t have the same pizzazz as Bueno. Just listen:

“Hello waiter, I’d like two Bueno burritos, por favor.”

But then try saying that same sentence in English with the same stresses on the same words:

“Hello waiter, I’d like two Good burritos, please.”

Just doesn’t pack the same punch, if you ask me. (Then again, the waiter might punch you if you order that in English because it kinda sounds like you’re coming on to him.)

Anyway, I just think bueno sounds better than good. But that’s not the only word that sounds better in Spanish than in English. There’s zapato (shoe), guapo (handsome), nombramiento (appointment), and corazon (heart). See how much prettier they are? And of course we cannot forget bragas (panties), babeo (dribble), cabo (butt), zurullo (turd), flatulento (farty) or moco (snot).

I think I might just make Spanish lessons a regular part of this journal. Hmmmmm…..
